1997 Cadillac Eldorado (Custom Conversion to Convertible) with customized interior, paint and total sound system by Dual, Blaupunkt and Stinger.

ONE OF A KIND!

I found and bought the car on Ebay and I flew up to Pittsburg, Pennsylvania in December of 04' to buy it, I knew what I wanted. I had previously owned a 1993 Lincoln Towncar which I had installed a sound system. I loved that car so much I drove it for 8 years until I decided that I needed to have a convertible. My wife was driving a Corvette so I decided I needed one too (1996 convertible C5 - We called them the "twins"). That lasted about 2 years until I got tired of getting in and out of it. I loved the speed and control of the Vet but I preferred the luxury and comfort of the Towncar. Quite the dilemma, what was I going to do to get both. This is what I came up with...

When I bought the car the motor was like new (17.000 miles) so I had no worries in that department. The first thing I decided to do to class up the car and make it "road worthy" was wheels and tires. I decided to go with ZINIK Z9 Sabini 18" Wheels with complementary GT Radial CHAMPIRO HPZ 45 for tires. On to the next step - redo the interior starting from the floor up. As you can see by the first picture, the interior was stripped to the floor and treated to prevent any rust. Because the car was converted aftermarket to a convertible some stabilization, although minimal, is lost in the body and I wanted to "tighten" it up and much as possible, quiet the ride by dampening any road-noise and insulate the body for the future sound system. To accomplish this I decided to use Stinger Expert Roadkill. As you can see, no surface of metal was left uncovered. Not only was the car interior thermally protected but the amount of road noise and sound vibration was amazingly reduced. While I was at it I installed a couple of new window motors to the rear.

The next step was to start on the new interior. I wanted to leave everything basically stock but there were some modifications that I could make and keep the original look. I started with the upholstery which was done at Bowers Custom Upholstery in Largo, Florida. Dewayne runs the shop and is a great guy. We decided to keep the same look (stitching) but go with a two-tone soft side vinyl instead of the original leather. The reasoning was simple - a softer feel and the ability to withstand wet conditions in case I ever got caught in a rainstorm before I could get the top up. As you can see by the photos below - He did a great job.

Now it was time to finish out the rest of the interior. Because the doors and panels were all like new I decided the best way to accomplish the factory look was to use a leather and vinyl dye. I wanted a color that was a little brighter than the paint and upholstery to create a tri-color combination. After researching I decided to use a product called COLORBOND and contacted Malcomb Johnson to give me the specs needed to complete the job. As you can see below all of the panels and pieces that I wanted to dye were then collected, masked-off and spray dyed. With the proper preperation this product works quite well.

Next comes the paint. I had already figured this out in my mind. I wanted a nice two-tone of silver and black so I could use the factory black of the original car which was already in excellent shape and it would save a ton of money. I needed someone who knew how to paint. The solution for me was Bryan Fitspatrick who owns and operates SCRATCH AND DENT in Largo, Florida. I picked a paint by DuPont called "Silva" as it matched the interior upholstery color and is probably one of the best paints on the market. As you can see by the photo in the middle above, the wood grain dash and door plates were painted the same color as the exterior . Bryan has done a lot of paint repairs for me and my friends and I'm always pleased with his work. He did exactly what I wanted. Awesome!

Since we're I'm talking about the body I want to point out one of the unique features that seperates this car from others like it. Whats really cool is the push button hard-boot that covers the top when its down and falls into place when the top is up. It is very aerodynamic, gives the car a "faster" look and makes the car quite unique in styling compared to the top snap-on covers that come with other models. The top is like new and I rarely put it up as I don't like to take it out in bad weather. It should be noted that the car has only 32,000 and change original miles to date.

Last, but not least, the sound system! In this decision I had to take into consideration that I would be driving the car most of the time with the top down which would take quite a bit of power. The second thing was that I didn't have alot of room for a woofer box in the trunk without loosing most of my truck space. The following is what I came up with.

Along with the components of the system is choosing the right accessories. In this category there was only one choice for me - Stinger High Performance Accessories. For those you asking yourself what accessories are... they are all the things necessary to link all of the stereo compontents. Keeping in mind that your stereo is only as good as its weakest link is the reason to chose to go with Stinger. I also want to give credit where credit is due and that goes to Shawn Morrison and the guys at Car Tunes in Clearwater, Florida for helping me with this install. To give you an idea, some of the accessories are shown in the following photos:

HISTORY OF THE CAR

In 1997 this car and was originally purchased and converted at Dimmitt Cadillac in Detroit, Michigan and sold for $55,000.00. From 1996 to 1997 this Dimmit Cadillac dealer entered the business of converting hardtop cadillacs to convertible cadillacs. A total of 37 of this type of convertibles were made before Dimmit Cadillac desided to get out of the conversion business. There are not many of these cars on the road today and this is the only one known to have been further customized to a "sound machine". It has many unique features such as a glass rear window with defrost in the convertible top and a fully automatic "hard boot".
